In the early seventies of last century a group of Bengali speaking Buddhist people who were mainly migrated from their ancestral place of the Chittagong district of the then East Pakistan and present Bangladesh during the post independence period were joined hands with an objective to unite their people residing in different parts of India and to maintain, safeguard and promote their cultural, religious, educational, economic and civic interest. This group was organizing meetings, seminars and debates in different parts of West Bengal and other states where there is a good number of Buddhist population was traced. In early 1973 the group noticed that there requests from their fellow members from different parts of the country to form a lay Buddhist organization with the participation of Buddhists whose mother tongue is Bengali and living in any part of India or abroad or a Buddhist who is born within the territory of the state of West Bengal, whatever may be his mother tongue. Out of this inspiration the group decided to form an organization with its name "All India Federation of Bengali Buddhists" which will work for the interest of the Bengali Buddhist and wherein people from different parts of India will be represented.
